The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has restated its commitment to strengthening accurate and reliable measurement systems as a critical foundation for industrial growth, consumer protection, and broader economic development in the country.

Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, gave the assurance at a conference held in Abuja to commemorate the 2026 World Metrology Day, where stakeholders examined the role of measurement science in improving trade, innovation, and policy effectiveness.

Okeke said metrology—the science of measurement—remains central to building confidence in markets and ensuring that products and services meet required quality benchmarks across different sectors of the economy.

According to him, “measurement standards remain critical to industrial growth, consumer protection, fair trade and innovation across various sectors of the economy.”

He explained that reliable measurement systems reduce disputes in commerce, improve product consistency, and support industries in meeting both local and international standards, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global markets.

Okeke noted that SON is working to strengthen the country’s measurement infrastructure while expanding collaboration with international partners to ensure greater transparency, fairness, and trust in economic transactions.

He disclosed that key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, SME operators, and innovators, would gather in Abuja on May 20 at the C Event Centre for further discussions on how measurement systems can be leveraged to drive economic growth.

“Captains of industry, policymakers, innovators, SME operators and business owners would gather… to discuss how measurement systems can support economic development,” he said, urging participants to take advantage of the engagement to improve operational standards and efficiency.

The SON boss further stressed that accurate and traceable measurements are essential tools for strengthening product quality, supporting regulatory compliance, and building consumer confidence in locally made goods and services.

He added that the organisation will continue to provide technical support to industries and regulators to ensure that measurement standards remain aligned with global best practices.

World Metrology Day, observed annually on May 20, highlights the importance of measurement science in trade, industry, governance, and sustainable development. The 2026 theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” focuses on the importance of reliable data in shaping evidence-based decisions.

Okeke reaffirmed SON’s resolve to sustain reforms that promote quality assurance, safeguard consumers, and support Nigeria’s long-term economic growth through stronger measurement systems and standards enforcement.
