Soldiers arrest suspected vandals in Abia palm plantation

Soldiers of the Ebere Jonathan Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ohafia, Abia State have arrested three suspects in connection with the vandalisation of vital equipment at a palm oil plantation located in Okon Aku Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The incident took place at the Eastern Region Estate Investment (EREI), a palm oil plantation established by Dr. Michael Okpara, the then Premier of defunct Eastern Region in 1961.

It was gathered that equipments at the plantation which have since gone obsolete had over the years come under series of attacks by vandals.

However, on Wednesday luck ran out of the three suspects after they vandalized one of the equipments known as oil processing mill located inside the plantation.

It was reported that they stormed the premises with a truck to cart away their looted items, and in the process of leaving, they were nabbed by soldiers.

Investigations revealed that Abia State government had previously issued a warning to the vandals to stay off the property as plans were ongoing to rehabilitate it.

The suspects’ arrest it was gathered followed a tip off by some hunters who reported to security agencies on the activities of the vandals.

The suspects are said to have been handed over to Zone 9 Police command in Umuahia and are currently in detention pending investigations.
