A recent report by Skytrax, an international evaluation organisation, revealed that no Nigerian airline ranked among the top 10 best-performing carriers in Africa for 2024.
Skytrax which assesses airlines worldwide said it surveyed over 325 airlines globally, with participation from customers of more than 100 nationalities. The data collection period spanned from September 2023 to May 2024.
For the methodology, passengers were asked to nominate their preferred airline or the one they deemed the best, providing ratings that reflected their satisfaction with various aspects of the travel experience both at the airport and onboard.
Customers nominated their favourite airline or airline they considered to be best, and ranked their satisfaction (1 to 5 scale) for aspects of the travel experience across both the airport and onboard environments.
While no Nigerian airlines secured a spot in the top 10 in Africa, several African carriers received recognition. The overall ranking for the top five are Ethiopian Airlines (1st), Royal Air Maroc (2nd), South African Airways (3rd), Kenya Airways (4th) and RwandAir (5th). The report also highlighted airlines like Air Mauritius (6th), Egyptair (7th), Airlink (8th), LIFT (9th) and FlySafair (10th).
However different airlines won in different categories. Kenya Airways won award forthe best cabin crew, while Egypt Air won the award for the most improved airline and South African Airways won the cleanest airline award. Ethiopian Air won the award for having the best economy class seats in Africa while Kenya Airways won the award for the best airline staff.
The absence of Nigerian carriers in the top 10 raises questions about the overall passenger experience offered by domestic carriers compared to their African counterparts.
