Six students hospitalised in Ijebu-Ode over methane gas emission

A suspected methane gas emission along the Agoro/Okunowa Road axis of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Friday, forced the emergency evacuation of students from six schools, and scores of pupils and residents sent to hospital.

The incident temporarily disrupted activities at Our Ladies Grammar School, Epe Garage; Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende; Titilayo Agbaje Comprehensive High School, Imosan; Ifesowapo Comprehensive High School, Imosan; St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, Imosan, and Orphanage Primary School, Imosan.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated “that tactical and surveillance teams from the Obalende Division, swiftly mobilised to the affected locations upon receiving information about a suspected chemical emission affecting students and residents in the area.

“Emergency response measures were immediately activated to safeguard lives, coordinate evacuations, and maintain public order.

“Affected victims were promptly evacuated to general hospital and other private medical facilities within the area for immediate medical attention.”

He confirmed that no life was lost, with all affected persons responding positively to treatment.

Preliminary environmental assessments from the State’s Air Quality Monitoring infrastructure revealed elevated methane gas concentrations within the monitoring coverage area.

Technical experts and emergency response agencies are currently conducting detailed investigations to determine the source of the emission and associated environmental risks.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, also deployed the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other tactical response teams to secure the affected area and support emergency operations. He further directed sustained surveillance and intensified security presence around the affected communities to prevent panic.
