Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja following his leadership of Nigeria’s delegation at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil. The event saw Nigeria reaffirm its position as a global leader in climate action and commitment to a sustainable green transition.
At the Leaders’ Climate Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In his statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature,” he urged world leaders to acknowledge the economic importance of nature and to ensure substantial financing is directed towards its protection and restoration through fair, accessible, and predictable funding channels.
He highlighted Nigeria’s climate agenda as “not just an aspiration, but a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.”

According to a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, on the sidelines of COP30, Shettima held strategic bilateral discussions focused on carbon market cooperation, aiming to unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon finance over the next ten years. This initiative seeks to accelerate Nigeria’s shift to a low-carbon economy.
The success at COP30 marks a significant step in Nigeria’s environmental leadership on the global stage.
