Former Senator Shehu Sani has urged politicians whose names were left out of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) candidates’ lists to reconsider pursuing further legal action, warning that continued litigation could drain their resources without changing the outcome.
Sani made the appeal in a post on X on Saturday, reacting to a Supreme Court ruling that paved the way for INEC to exclude some candidates from its lists.
He advised the affected politicians to study the implications of the judgment and avoid spending more money, time and effort on cases he believes are unlikely to succeed.
“The Supreme Court ruling that enabled INEC to exclude some names of candidates is very clear. Affected candidates should not waste their money, time and energy fighting a lost battle,” he wrote.
The former lawmaker also appealed to legal practitioners, particularly Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), to discourage the affected candidates from instituting fresh lawsuits that could add to their financial burden.

According to Sani, lawyers should consider the circumstances of the candidates and avoid encouraging them to pursue further cases.
“I also wish to appeal to those Barristers and SANs to ‘pity’ those candidates and allow them to rest, and not mislead them into spending more money filing fresh suits,” he added.
Sani urged the politicians to accept the current situation and redirect their attention towards future electoral opportunities rather than continue with legal disputes over their exclusion.
He noted that the present political cycle would eventually come to an end, giving the affected candidates another opportunity to prepare for subsequent elections.
“Four years will come and go; let them strategise for the future,” he said.
