The Deputy Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has said the Senate Committee on Communications and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would revisit the price floor for the over 140 million active subscribers in the country.
He said this at the weekend in Lagos on the sidelines of a ‘Retreat for the Senate Committee on Communications’, organised by NCC.
Adeleke stated that telecoms companies that are providing network services won’t be allowed to go beyond and above certain price.
“We all know that things are difficult a little bit. We will be able to talk to them, see where they are going and then we would come to a middle, where the subscribers and the operators can meet half way.”
Price floor ensures that the ordinary people get services at a very reasonable cost.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, called on the National Assembly and the Senate Committee on Communications to cooperate with it in regulating the telecommunications industry. He disclosed that such cooperation would ensure that the sector is effectively regulated.
Represented by the Head, Legislative and Government Relations, NCC, Mr. Inatimi Spiff, Danbatta said he was delighted on how enthusiastic the committee members were going about the growth and development of the telecommunications industry.
According to him, it is evident that NCC and the Senate share a common interest in overcoming the challenges of the industry, as well as a common aspiration towards progress for the benefit of Nigeria.
‘’Hence this retreat gives us further opportunity to seek your cooperation in carrying out our mandate as the independent regulator of the telecommunications industry.”
