As the Senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s constituents believe that he is a man of courage who speaks truth to power. He is widely regarded as one of the strongest advocates for equity for the South-East in Nigeria.

From the time he graduated from the University of Benin in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, and a Master’s degree in 1982, he has shown the growth pattern of a resilient person.

Senator Abaribe served as a lecturer at the Edo State University and later became the Area Manager for Southern Nigeria at SCOA, a position he held until 1991, when he joined NICON and later became a Senior Manager for Investment at the corporation.

Between 1993 and 1995, he served as the CEO of Integrated Mortgage Company. His exploits in the corporate world prepared him for more challenging leadership positions in politics as he later emerged as the deputy Governor of Abia State in 1999.

Between 2000 and 2003, he faced a daunting challenge in his political career. Twice, he was impeached, and twice, he survived. Even though he resigned his position as the deputy governor of Abia State when the state House of Assembly was plotting his impeachment for the third time, they still went ahead and impeached you. But to the pleasant surprise of many, the political turbulence of that period only toughened   Abaribe.

Interestingly, he went ahead and contested for the governorship seat in Abia in 2003 under the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and lost. But by the next election circle in 2007, Abaribe emerged as the Senator representing Abia South under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and has remained their senator till date.

His book, Made in ABA: A Life of Coincidences, which tells his story, is an account of the life of a man who set out to make an impact despite all odds.

Seator Enyinnaya Abaribe wins The Sun Lifetime Achievement Award for 2025.
