Arewa Think Tank (ATTAK) has said that the 19 governors who served during the Second Republic, most of who have died, deserved to be awarded national posthumous honour.
Advocating this position in a statement yesterday, the Convener, Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give the late governors such national honour.
Yakubu argued that majority of the Second Republic governors were very poor when they were voted into power, adding that they also left office even poorer.
He regretted that the accusation of corruption against Second Republic government that led to military takeover was a child play compared to level of corruption by political leaders in the country in the last eight years.
Arewa Think Tank, however, advised President Tinubu to seize the 63rd independence anniversary to learn from incorruptible leaders before him since the country became independent as someone who witnessed all political developments in the last 63 years.
The group also called on the leadership of the National Assembly to amend the Electoral Law in such a way as to dispense with all election cases before elected officials are inaugurated.
The statement read in part: “On this special occasion of the celebration of the 63rd independent anniversary of our dear country, Nigeria, we are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to as a matter of fact to accord the 19 governors, most of whom had died, the national posthumous honour.
“These governors came to office poor and left office even poorer. The military government accused them of corruption and took over power.
But we dare to say that they are angels compared to the high level of corruption we witnessed in the last eight years of democracy.
“We also want to tell President Tinubu that this anniversary celebration is a golden opportunity for him to exhibit his political experience for the betterment of the country having witnessed political developments in the past 63 years of our Independent as a nation.
“We believe that President Tinubu stands a better chance to emulate incorruptible past leaders having participated effectively in political activities of the country for years before becoming President of Nigeria, the giant of Africa.”
