Scores of workers in Kano State will soon be thrown into the labour market, as Shoprite, one of Nigeria’s leading retail stores, announced its exit from the state.

Saturday Sun gathered that the decision by the organisation to quit the Kano market might not be unconnected to unfavourable market dynamics.  Popularly known as Ado Bayero mall, the arrival of Shoprite in the state was heralded with fanfare, as excited residents thronged to buy from them. But over the years, the company’s share of the retail market had continued to nosedive.

In a letter to its employees dated December 7, 2023 and entitled “Ado Bayero Mall Store closing announcement” the store said that it would  be closing its doors on January 14, 2024.  The announcement was signed by Hubertus Rick for Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited.
