Sanwo-Olu hosts African movie stars, other celebs at AMAA Awards tomorrow

Tomorrow, Sunday October 30, Lagos will stand still as organisers of Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) celebrate talented African moviemakers.  However, while the AMAA returns for its 18th edition at Jewel Aeida Hall, Lekki, Lagos, it is not going to be business as usual. The organisers have unveiled an exciting line-up of activities heralding the awards.

According to AMAA founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, this year’s edition of the awards will be awe-inspiring. “This is a deliberate move to rejig the awards and make it a niche event,” she said.  The AMAA weeklong activities began with prayer sessions at Agege Central Mosque and St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos. This was followed by the graduation ceremony of African Film Academy trainees on October 25. The Wellness Day came two days after on October 27, while on October 28, the organisers played host to dignitaries and fashion buffs in a series of conferences that included diaspora discussion, music and film summit, and rounded this off with a fashion show. But then, the fun continues as the nominee’s party is billed for today.

However, the major highlight of this year’s AMAA Gala is the presence of the Chief Host and Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who will lead other dignitaries including Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, to the event. As an icing on the cake, the gala will showcase performances from top artistes including juju legend, King Sunny Ade, P-Square, Kate Henshaw, Young Jon, Zadok, and Yinka Davies. Other musicians performing are Ayo Bankole, Matty, Veentage Band, DJ Kenchello, and Gerald Eze, after which guests would wind down at two different after parties.

Meanwhile, popular comedian/MC, Funnybone, TV host, Kachi Offia, and comedienne/actress, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah have been confirmed as the hosts of the awards. In the same vein, the awards’ official media partner, StarTimes Nigeria, will broadcast the ceremony live on its ST Nollywood Channel 131 and ST Nollywood Plus Channel 102.

Beaming with excitement, Kingsley James, content director/show producer, enthused: “All I can say is that this year’s AMAA will blow your mind away. It will be a combination of glitz, glamour, and reward for true professionalism and excellence.”
