Sam Neill: ‘Jurassic Park’ star dies at 78

New Zealand actor Sam Neill has passed away at the age of 78.

Neill, known for portraying the character of Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, died on Monday in Sydney, Australia.

The Hollywood veteran’s demise was announced by his family in a statement posted on the actor’s Instagram page.

According to Neill’s family, his death was “sudden and unexpected”. However, the statement added that the actor was cancer free.

“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life.

“The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”

“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss,” the family said.

Sam Neill battled battled a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. He disclosed in April 2026 that he was cancer free.

Neill’s acting career spanned over five decades. He is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.
