The Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) under the Rural Electrification Agency, has expressed commitment to intervene in Benue state by providing solar hybrids and mini grids to boost access to electricity in some parts of the state.
The NEP team lead by Mr. Adejoke Odumosu, disclosed this in Makurdi during a strategic meeting with officials of the state Ministry of Power, Renewable Energy and Transport, led by the Hon. Commissioner, Barr. Omale Omale.
Odumosu explained that the meeting was meant to foster intergovernmental relations to build the capacity of the state in decentralizing the new electricity Act and mitigate risks through collaboration.
He listed their interventions in the state under the sub themes of Solar hybrids and mini grids, Covid 19 and Standalone for households and MSMEs solar home systems.
He said interventions under the Solar Hybrid and mini grids include the establishment of a 350 kilo watts plant in Chito in Ukum LGA, establishment of a 50 kilo watt plant in Nyamkyume, Vandeikya LGA and a 50 Kilo watt plant in Sati -Ikyov, Ushongo LGA of the state.
Under the COVID-19 theme, NEP team lead said interventions include establishment of a 50 Kilo watt plant in Benue State University, (BSU), Makurdi and a 50 Kilo watt plant at General Hospital, Katsina-Ala.
Also under the Standalone for Households and MSMEs solar home systems, the analysis shows
0.86 percent for commercial, 0.02 percent for public and 98.6 percent for residential.
Odumosu promised that at the official handover of the projects, the state will be fully involved and the staff of the ministry will be trained on maintaining the power plants.
Responding, the commissioner of Power, Renewable Energy and Transport, Barr. Omale Omale, commended NEP for the interventions in the state.
He noted that the lack of awareness on the projects has greatly affected the level of participation and collaboration by the state and pledged the total support of the Benue State Government to enhance a more profitable relationship.
