Two hundred and seven runners have emerged winners in the Run For Asiwaju 2027 Mini Marathon, which took place on Sunday in Orile-Agege, a suburb of Lagos State.
The event witnessed participation from over one thousand runners, including 10 elite marathon athletes, showcasing the competitive spirit and camaraderie within the community.
The challenging 4.8km race began at the Agege Local Government Area, winding through Odo Eran, Oba Ogunji, Oke Koto, Oniwaya, and Dopemu. The course interconnected Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road to Agbotikuyo, ultimately concluding at the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area.
Various categories were created to ensure inclusivity, featuring youths, professional athletes, elderly participants, individuals with disabilities, VIPs, and representatives from both Hausa and Igbo communities.
With a prize pool totalling ₦2.3 million, the first 200 finishers each received ₦10,000, while seven elite athletes were awarded ₦50,000 each.
After the race, Honourable Akinola Idowu, the Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, stated, “Sport is a powerful unifier. This event, which will be held three times this year leading up to the 2027 general election, aims to raise awareness among Orile-Agege residents about the necessity of re-electing President Bola Tinubu for a second term and promoting a healthier lifestyle.”
Mr. Liadi Oladipo, Chairman of the Orile-Agege LCDA Sports Committee, declared the event a resounding success, emphasising its role in galvanising grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
“We acknowledged a few minor shortcomings, but we effectively addressed our primary concern: cheating. Many who attempted to manipulate their way to the finish line were caught. We stand firm in our belief that the 207 runners who completed the marathon are the true champions,” he asserted.
“We will take action to improve on any lapses in future editions.”
