The United States has accused Iran of attempting to “hold the world hostage” through a series of retaliatory missile and drone strikes following escalating hostilities in the region.

Speaking at the State Department, US Secretary of State said Iran’s actions had heightened concerns about the threat posed by the country’s leadership to global security.

“I think we are all seeing right now the threat this clerical regime poses to the region and to the world. They are trying to hold the world hostage,” Rubio said.

The remarks come after joint strikes by the United States and on February 28 targeted sites inside Iran, an operation that resulted in the death of Iran’s longtime supreme leader, .

Since the attacks, Iran has launched waves of missiles and drones toward Israel and several Gulf Arab states that host American military bases, raising fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Rubio said the ongoing military campaign was aimed at weakening Iran’s capacity to continue such attacks on neighbouring countries and their infrastructure.

“They are attacking neighboring countries, their energy infrastructure, their civilian population,” he said. “The objective of this mission is to destroy their ability to continue to do that, and we are well on our way to achieving that.”

The US diplomat made the remarks during an event honouring Americans who were wrongfully detained abroad, where families of several hostages were present.

Among them were relatives of , an ex-FBI agent who vanished on Iran’s Kish Island in 2007 and whom US authorities later concluded died while in Iranian custody. Rubio said the case remained a stark reminder of the nature of the government in Tehran.
