The Eze Imo Palace in Mbari, Owerri, was filled with gratitude penultimate week as the chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty, Eze Emmanuel Okeke, hosted more than 40 widows of deceased traditional rulers from across the state.
The gathering of the Ugoezes centred on the payment of all outstanding funeral entitlements owed by the council. In a gesture described as long overdue relief, each widow received N1 million in burial benefits due to their late husbands. Transport and mobilisation allowances were also provided.
Addressing journalists after the event, Eze Okeke said the meeting was convened to clear the arrears, interact directly with the widows, and assess their welfare. He explained that the payments covered obligations that had built up over about two years due to unforeseen circumstances. He said that settling the entitlements falls within the constitutional responsibilities of the council.

“The council’s duty does not end with the payment of burial benefits,” Eze Okeke said. “We have continued to maintain regular contact with our Ugoezes and provide support whenever necessary.”
He expressed satisfaction with the exercise and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of traditional rulers and their families. He assured the widows that they would not be neglected and would continue to receive the respect, care and recognition due to them as members of the traditional institution.
Eze Okeke, who is also the South East chairman of Traditional Rulers’ Council, commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for his support to the traditional institution and his efforts in transforming communties in the state.
He restated the commitment of traditional rulers to preserving and promoting Igbo culture and heritage, and assured Imolites and Ndi Igbo worldwide that the council remains dedicated to upholding the dignity and integrity of the institution.
