On March 16, 2023, the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, District 9110, donated 16 boxes of sanitary pads to 256 students at Kuramo Secondary School on Victoria Island. The donation was made to commemorate International Women’s Day and is in line with the theme of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign.
The donation event was attended by several members of the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, including Rtn Oluwagbemisola Aruwayo-Obe (Club President), Rtn Osas Airen (President-Elect), Rtn Gbemisola Shonibare (Youth Service Director), Rtn Temitayo Ayorinde (Club Secretary), Rtn Christiana Okenla (Club Treasurer); and Rtn Busayo Adedoyin, Member.
According to Rtn Gbemisola Shonibare, “Equal opportunities alone are not sufficient. It is also essential to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment through equitable actions, such as ensuring young girls do not miss school due to lack of sanitary items.”
The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden believes that education is a fundamental human right, and no student should miss out on it because of lack of access to basic necessities. The club is proud to support the students at Kuramo Secondary School and promote a healthy learning environment.
Speaking at the event, Rtn Oluwagbemisola Aruwayo-Obe said, “inaccessibility to menstrual health management continues to be a barrier to girls’ education. This project impacts several of the UN’s Global Goals, including Goal 1 to end poverty; Goal 4 for good education; and Goal 5 for gender equality, as girls are being left behind and are missing out on their education and employment potential. This is critical to RC Lekki Golden as this will reduce the illiteracy rate amongst girls in our communities. This project aligns with our clubs’ strategic goal as it focuses on the area of education & Literary, economic development.”
Donating sanitary pads aligns with Rotary International’s global effort to end period poverty and promote gender equality. By supporting young girls and promoting menstrual hygiene, the Rotary Club of Lekki Golden hopes to contribute to the global effort to empower women and girls.
