As part of the activities to mark this year’s Basic Education And Literacy Month, Rotary Club of Akowonjo organised a Spelling Brainy Bee Competition for some schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The schools that attended the programme include State Comprehensive Junior College, Alimosho, Alimosho Junior Grammar School, Alimosho, and State High School, Alimosho.
After the competition, Alimosho Junior Grammar School took 1st position, followed by State Junior High School, Alimosho who came 2nd, while State Comprehensive Junior College, Alimosho came 3rd.
In his remarks, the Immediate Past President, Rotary Club of Akowonjo, Olawale Ajenifuja,
said Rotary has been doing this for so many years. “What we are doing is not just something for Rotary International, it is approved by the United Nation”.
He stated the importance of spelling in education saying spelling cuts across all the facets of education. “What is the essence of what you say to the students and they cannot put it in writing. It affects the academic performance of the child badly. Spelling helps in shaping the life of a human being from the grass roots”, Ajenifuja said
The General Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Agege, Prince Adebowale Adeoye Bashiru, stated that they have been collaborating with Non Governmental Organisations (NGS’s), because the government cannot do it alone. “NGO’s work with government and Rotary Club is one of the NGO’s we partner with.
The General Permanent Secretary who was represented by Ayodele Adeyemi, expressed satisfaction over the programme describing it as fantastic. “Spelling has been something important to do with child’s smartness, alertness and purposefulness. It does a lot to a students life. You have to be responsive, alert, smart, comported and calm”, he added.
Winner, Fakoya Oluwaseyi from Alimosho Junior Grammar School, felt great to win the award. “It has been so long I have been practicing some Spelling B questions and competitions. So this has to be my first one. I just want to say thank you to Rotary, and anyone for organising it”.
He advised other students to work hard and be brave. “They can achieve anything achievable in the world”, he said.
Other participants received awards of certificate.
