Former England captain Wayne Rooney has dismissed speculation that he used weight-loss injections to slim down, while revealing that years of football injuries forced him to undergo surgery on his nose.
Rooney, 40, said he had been working hard to lose weight through exercise after claims emerged that medication was responsible for his slimmer appearance.
“It’s a shame, because I’m working really hard to lose weight,” Rooney said in an interview with the Daily Mail ahead of the release of his new Disney+ documentary with his wife, Coleen.
The former Manchester United striker also explained that his nose operation was carried out because he had developed difficulty breathing through one side of his nose.
“I couldn’t blow one side out of my nose and so I had it fixed,” he said.
Rooney had broken his nose twice during his playing career. His first injury occurred while playing for Manchester United against Preston North End in an FA Cup match in 2015.
He suffered another broken nose while playing for DC United against Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer, but delayed surgery for several years before eventually having the procedure after the 2026 World Cup.
Coleen said she had encouraged her husband to undergo the operation, partly because of his snoring.
“I tried to get him to do it because of his snoring,” she said.
Rooney later revealed on his Stick to United podcast that he was recovering from the operation and had plastic tubes in his nose to assist the healing process.
The revelations come as the couple launch The Real Rooneys, a 10-part Disney+ documentary offering viewers an inside look at their family life and careers.
The series follows Rooney, Coleen and their four sons Kai, 16, Klay, 13, Kit, 10, and Cass, 8 as the former footballer moves further into media work after stepping away from football management.
