Nigerian gospel singer, Panam Percy Paul has paid tribute to his longtime friend and colleague, Ron Kenoly, who died on Tuesday aged 81.

The emotional tribute was conveyed in a statement posted on Instagram hours after the iconic American singer’s demise was confirmed by his longtime music director, Bruno Miranda.

Paul recounted receiving the news from Kenoly’s family, who informed him before going public due to their close bond.

He further recounted how meeting Kenoly for the first time in 1995 had a profound impact on him, noting that the “legendary gospel music minister” remained humble and reachable despite achieving global fame.

The statement reads, “Early this morning, 3rd February 2026, I lost my brother and friend, the legendary Gospel Music Minister, Dr Ron Kenoly.

“It was an honour to receive a call from his family as they carefully told me of the passing of my friend and Brother Ron.

“My mind suddenly travelled back to 1995 when we first met. I became numb for some seconds before responding to the family member who called. She was trying to talk between tears. My heart skipped. I became emotional as she said… ‘We needed to tell you first before it goes public, we knew how close you were’.

“For a moment my mind refused to accept what I just heard.”

He described Kenoly as a phenomenal lover of Jesus Christ and truth.

“Amidst all the fame and accolades he still remained humble and reachable.

“He was also very teachable and acknowledges creativity with very childish smile and huge laughter. His unique singing voice is unforgettable,” Paul stated.

He noted that Kenoly’s spirit-filled album “LIFT HIM UP” would remain a turning point in music ministry.

“My Brother Ron, I’m glad that God brought us together.

“I’ll never forget the 30 years of our friendship and brotherhood.

“Thanks for the many lessons we shared, and experiences we went through.

“I’ll keep singing your songs. I miss you, I’ll always love you,” he added.
