Development Governance International (DGI) Consult has launched a 12-month leadership fellowship to strengthen leadership capacity and practical problem-solving in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N) in Adamawa, Kwara and Sokoto states.
The RMNCAH+N Leadership Fellowship is part of the Enhancing Leadership, Governance and Management Capacities (ELGMC) Project under the Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health in Nigeria (SARAH) Project, a four-year initiative funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Consult Chief Executive Officer, DGI, Dr. Gafar Alawode, said the fellowship was designed to move beyond conventional training by enabling participants to identify and address real health-sector challenges within their institutions and states.
He urged fellows to take ownership of the challenges they had identified and remain committed to developing and implementing practical solutions.
Alawode said the programme would nurture a new generation of leaders with stronger personal effectiveness, wider spheres of influence and improved problem-solving skills to address RMNCAH+N and other health programme challenges.
Over the next 12 months, fellows will participate in structured learning, self-directed learning, peer engagement, practical problem solving and mentoring support. They will apply the knowledge gained to develop and implement actions addressing specific health challenges.
He said the fellowship would also provide opportunities for cross-state collaboration and experience sharing, while building a network of RMNCAH+N Leadership Champions capable of sustaining leadership and health-system improvements beyond the SARAH Project.
Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive certificates of completion and be considered for state and national recognition as RMNCAH+N Leadership Champions.
Also, Consult Programme Officer, DGI, Opemipo Afolabi, said the fellowship was designed to build a community of leaders committed to improving RMNCAH+N outcomes through stronger leadership and innovative problem solving.
She said fellows would complete leadership capacity self-assessment and problem-analysis tools before undergoing training in strategic thinking, people mobilisation, motivation, critical thinking, adaptive and change management, accountability and results orientation.
Participants are drawn from state ministries of health, primary healthcare boards, hospital service management boards, academia, professional groups and other relevant institutions.
Afolabi said the programme would translate leadership development into practical action and measurable contributions to RMNCAH+N outcomes across the three states.
