The headquarters of Khana Local Government Area, Bori, in Rivers State, was thrown into panic after yet-to-be-identified gunmen shot dead a former Chief Security Officer of the council, Mr Letam Kine.
The incident occurred along Polytechnic Road in Bori at about 6 p.m. on Sunday.
An eyewitness told journalists that the attack triggered panic in the area, as residents and passers-by fled for safety while shop owners hurriedly shut their businesses.
According to the source, the assailants fled the scene immediately after carrying out the attack before security operatives arrived.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Thomas Bariere, condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press and Public Communications, Barry Neemana, Bariere described Kine’s murder as heartbreaking, stressing that such criminality has no place in a law-abiding society.
The council chairman expressed concern that the incident came barely weeks after the killing of Mr Clement Deegbara J. of Kpong Community, noting that the repeated attacks suggested the activities of armed criminal gangs determined to undermine the peace and security of Khana.
He called on security agencies to intensify operations across the local government area and ensure that those responsible for the heinous crimes were swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.

Bariere also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, praying that God would grant them the strength, comfort and courage to bear the painful loss.
He urged residents of Khana to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while continuing to support security agencies with timely and credible intelligence to aid ongoing investigations and prevent further criminal activities.
The chairman reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of his administration.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing, saying the corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while a full investigation has commenced to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), advised the bereaved family to formally lodge a complaint with the police.
She said: “Although the family of the deceased has not yet lodged a formal complaint with the Police, they are strongly advised to do so, as this will aid ongoing investigations and facilitate the prompt administration of justice.
“The Rivers State Police Command remains committed to ensuring that all those connected with this incident are identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
