Rivers assembly crisis: APP slams “sacked” lawmakers over directive to governor

The Action Peoples Party (APP) has berated the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) over their directive to Governor Siminalaiyi Fubara to stop spending from the state’s coffers.

The APP, in a statement by its National Deputy Publicity Secretary, Emeka Uwazurike, said the directive to Fubara was a joke taken too far.

The party said that since the lawmakers’ seats had been declared vacant following their defections, they were not in a position to issue directives to the governor.

According to the APP, “The said N800 billion budget for the 2024 fiscal year, for which the sacked lawmakers had ordered the governor to represent, was duly passed by the then constitutionally recognised Edison Ehie-led Rivers State House of Assembly, and representing the budget, which is already an act of the state Assembly, would amount to a gross constitutional breach and a disservice to the good people of Rivers State.”

The party, while stating that the directive was an attempt to distract the Rivers State government, urged Governor Fubara to remain focused on delivering service to the people of the state.

“We want to urge the governor here to go ahead with the good work he is doing in the state unhindered. The APP, as an opposition party in the land, will continue to fight injustice, and this is one injustice we, as a party, will not condone,” it stated.
