The Trade Union Congress (TUC) Lagos State Council has called on the federal government to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs and other taxes, citing their detrimental impact on the already struggling Nigerian populace.

In a statement, the TUC Chairman and Secretary, Gbenga Ekundayo and Aladetan Abiodun, respectively, expressed concern that the tariff increase coincides with the removal of petrol subsidies and rising costs of essential goods and services, further exacerbating the financial woes of ordinary citizens and businesses.

They emphasized the negative consequences of the tariff hike, stating that it adds to household burdens, jeopardizes businesses, and fuels inflation, potentially leading to economic turmoil.

The Unionists urged the government to reconsider its decision, stabilize the exchange rate, and explore alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on the national grid and lower electricity costs in the long run. They also highlighted the importance of efficiency improvements in electricity distribution and management.

They reminded lawmakers of the need for policies that stimulate economic growth and job creation, such as incentivizing investment, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and fostering a business environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

The TUC emphasized the urgency of addressing the financial strain on citizens and businesses, emphasizing that the timing of the tariff increase is particularly ill-fated given the existing economic challenges. They urged policymakers to prioritize the welfare of the people and implement measures that promote the affordability and accessibility of essential services like electricity.

They concluded by expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation, where individuals are forced to finance electricity installations without any payback and are now subjected to tariff increases, while DISCOs benefit from these installations as assets.
