A group of retired military personnel staged a protest at the entrance of the Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Tuesday, demanding the immediate settlement of their unpaid entitlements. The protestors set up canopies and chairs, blocking the entrance to the ministry, while displaying placards that called for the swift disbursement of their long-overdue benefits.

This demonstration follows a similar protest in December 2024, when the retirees shut down the ministry in response to the government’s failure to fulfill their financial claims. The protestors are pressing for the disbursement of various entitlements, including palliative payments for the period between October 2023 and November 2024. Additionally, they are seeking an increase of N32,000 to their monthly pensions, a lump sum payment for their security debarment allowance, and the refund of pension contributions deducted from the salaries of soldiers who were medically discharged.

After the December protest, the federal government made a partial payment of 50 percent of the outstanding entitlements, with assurances that the remaining balance would be settled in due course. However, the retirees have expressed frustration over the government’s continued failure to meet its commitments, with many feeling that their rightful claims have been unfairly delayed or neglected.

The ongoing unrest highlights the growing dissatisfaction among retired military personnel, who argue that their sacrifices and service to the nation warrant prompt and full compensation. As the situation remains unresolved, the retirees are determined to continue their fight for justice, urging the government to take immediate action to address their grievances.
