Reps summon IBEDC, others over N100bn debt

House-of-Reps-1-e1695043724498

From Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC), yesterday , summoned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) over N100 billion owed to the Federation Account.

Chairman of the Committee, Bamidele Salam, who issued the summon at an investigative hearing, directed the Discos to appear before the panel within 72 hours or face sanctions for  contempt.

Salam, who expressed concern  that some of the liabilities have remained unpaid for over a decade, stated that the affected Discos had repeatedly failed to honour the  invitations of the committee.

Consequently, he noted that it is imperative for an  urgent and decisive action to recover the funds and ensure they are properly accounted for in the interest of the Nigerian government and the public.

PAC had on August 20, summoned 11 electricity distribution companies over a cumulative debt of ₦2.6 trillion owed to the Federation Account.

Nevertheless, the lawmakers noted that management of IBEDC, BEDC, and PHEDC have consistently failed to honour  its invitations to account for their outstanding liabilities, as contained in the Auditor-General’s reports for the 2021 and 2022 financial years.
