The Nigerian Iconoclast Award has announced its return with the 2026 “Originality Vanguard” show, scheduled for October 17 in Lagos.
Prioritising unique sounds and authentic expression over commercial chart success, the organisers aim to honour artists, who push creative boundaries. Last year’s ceremony recognised heavyweights Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido and Ziro Kingin for their distinct contributions to the sonic landscape:
Burna Boy: Celebrated for blending traditional African instrumentation and talking drums with modern dancehall and Afrobeat to create a sound rooted in pan-African pride.
Other News
Wizkid: Recognised for his smooth synthesis of Lagos street pidgin, Caribbean reggae and understated guitar melodies.
Davido: Honoured for his high-energy, arena-ready anthems driven by fast beats and signature crowd engagement.
Ziro Kingin: Highlighted for his raw narrative style. The Surulere-born rapper and spoken-word artist incorporates Yoruba, English and lesser-known local dialects. His album Echoes in the Lagoon earned critical acclaim and a dedicated underground following for its honest portrayal of struggle and survival.
This year’s extensive list of nominees highlights both global superstars and distinct street-pop trailblazers.
