Residents of Gowon Estate and its environs are beginning to heave sigh of relief from drug-related crimes, street violence, and the growing influence of criminal gangs operating within the area following the sustained enforcement effort of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Task Force).

Until now, the area had assumed notoriety for illicit drug sales, suspicious gatherings, and criminal hideouts. In what has been described by security analysts as one of the most coordinated anti-drug crackdowns in the axis in recent years, the state task led by CSP Tayo Akerele embarked on multiple raids, arrests, and the dismantling of notorious black spots around Gowon Estate, Egbeda, and adjoining streets during which caches of illicit substances including Colorado, Indian hemp, narcotics, and other controlled drugs were uncovered.

In some cases, Sunday Sun gathered that operatives of the task force reportedly discovered hard drugs concealed inside parked vehicles and hidden among cash bundles allegedly used by collaborators within the illegal trade network.

Residents who spoke to Sunday Sun said the growing visibility of enforcement personnel in the area had disrupted what many previously described as “untouchable” drug syndicates. “Before now, some of these boys operated almost freely,” said a resident who asked not to be named for security reasons. “People knew where drugs were sold, but there was fear because some of the operators seemed protected.”

Recall that in June 2025, the agency announced the arrest of 19 suspects linked to drug trafficking and related criminal activities during raids across Gowon Estate and adjoining streets. Officials described the operation as part of a broader strategy to completely stamp out hooliganism and narcotics distribution in the area. “This operation reflects our zero-tolerance policy against illegal activities that threaten the peace and security of the state,” Akerele stated after one of the raids.

Security watchers say the significance of the crackdown goes beyond arrests. They argue that sustained enforcement disrupts supply chains, weakens territorial control by gangs, and sends a strong message to criminal networks that previously operated with little resistance.
