As part of it’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Recare Limited, makers of Natures Gentle Touch, carried out a thorough clean-up exercise of the popular Aswani Road in the Isolo area of Lagos, location of their office complex.
Members of staff of the company took time out to clear the grasses, cleaned the gutters, raked the dearths along the road, ensuring that the environment was totally cleaned up.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Chijioke Anaele, who was part of the team, said that the idea is to support the government in what they are doing to ensure general cleanliness of the society and environment adding that it is part of the company’s philosophy. “If you go through our corporate profile, you will be able to find out that we try to maintain adequate wellness within the environment of our operational areas. We also ensure the well-being of the stakeholders-the people, host community, staff, employees, customers, vendors, anybody within our areas of operations”
Anaele, the company has done this gesture consistently for almost a decade in other to assist the government in what they do. “We are not saying that government is not doing what they should do. They are. But this road is very busy and government is also very busy. They have a weekly market that happens every Tuesday so, that generates a whole lot of dearths. They can do so much, but we are also complimenting what they are doing to ensure that every Thursday and Friday, if we miss the Thursdays because of our own operational efficiency, we come out on Fridays to ensure that we clean up the road for the week so we can start a new week in a neat and friendly environment”.
He also disclosed that the idea was incorporated during the State government pronouncement of every Thursday as an environmental cleaning exercise where businesses are expected to open or resume by 10am. So they use that opportunity to ensure that they keep their environments clean. He added that their environment is not just within the office premises, but also extended to the outside. “What we are doing today is basically a routine weekly exercise that we have been doing for close to a decade now. Even before this, you could also see that we have done the drainage. Some of the drainages have collapsed, so during rain it causes a whole lot of over flooding into some of the premises. We understand from NIMET that this year’s rain will be heavy, and we have also started to guard against that. So you could see that we have cleaned the drainage, and we are also going to raise blocks to ensure that it enter through the main channel and prevent it from coming to threaten the foundations of the companies on the road. Those are some of the proactive measures that we are also taking to ensure that our environment of operations is safe”.
On the dilapidated road leading to their office complex, Anaele spoke about what the company is doing to maybe liaising with the government or other companies around to do something about it. “This is an industrial area. I think they have a committee. All the companies have representatives who are interfacing with the government from the local government level. So they are speaking to the government on the way forward. I think government is responding because you can find out that it was worse than this before now, but they have been able to fill it up to some minimal extent just to allow vehicles to pass smoothly”.
In advising other corporate organisation in other to emulate them in doing some of these things that they are doing, Chijioke said, “It depends on what their philosophy is. What we are basically doing is part of our philosophy that I mentioned earlier on. We are not doing it for any game, any form of popularity, or any media hype. We are doing it because we felt it is worth doing, and because we have hygienic products. We provide solutions to hair and scalp solutions of Nigerian women. We came up with the hand sanitiser during the Ebola period when Nigerians were looking for succour. So during the COVID-19 that it was necessary that you wash your hands every minutes and keep a social distancing, we came up with the hand wash. Every organisation should be able to find a way of helping out in the society, something that will benefit your host community, and support the government’s intentions and government establishments in carrying out some of the responsibilities in ensuring that our environment of operations are safe. This is our own position, nobody asked us to do this. We are doing it everywhere that we have our business as long as I remember because, I met this practice as part of the company’s philosophy”.
