A pro-education civil society organisation, Connected Development (CODE) said rebuilding the education sector in communities affected by years of insurgency is critical to return of peace and development in Borno State.
Acting Chief Executive of Connected Development, Hyeladzira Mshelia made this known yesterday at a media parley in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Mshelia said the involvement of community leaders and local population in the implementation of education projects and initiatives, would boost peace-building efforts in the state and accelerate development.
She urged community members to take ownership of such projects and initiatives to drive the solutions to the impact of nearly two decades of violence in the state.

She said the organisation, which currently works in four local government areas in Borno, provides the right information to the citizens through a programme, to help them ask the right questions from the local authorities in their areas.
“When you equip citizens with information, data and access, they are able to ask the right questions. We realised that even the little money that we have is being held to account and so to be used to do the right thing and what is supposed to be done,” she told journalists at the parley.
She said the effort would strengthen transparency and accountability in the budgetary allocation and implementations.
She said the organisation was also building the capacity of local government leadership on their roles to respond to critical needs for quality education. These needs, according to her, include toilets, water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, teaching aid among others.
At the panel session, other partners also spoke about the current state of education financing and transparency in Borno and strengthening transparency and accountability in education financing and gender responsibility.
