Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee for the grand reception of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State to the All Progressives Alliance (APC), Sir Joseph Ari, has offered perspective to the strategic imperative behind the governor’s realignment with the ruling party.
According to him, “politics, like life itself, is dynamic. It responds to context, pressure, timing and the overriding need for survival—both of individuals and of collective interests. In Plateau State, the decision of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to realign with the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not occur in a vacuum. It was the product of a tense political climate, deepening disunity, and an approaching electoral storm that threatened not only a political party but the peace, stability, and developmental trajectory of the state. When viewed against this backdrop, the governor’s decision emerges not merely as a political calculation, but as an inevitable and wise intervention.
“Before this decision, Plateau State was drifting dangerously into political fragmentation. The political space had become overheated, polluted by unguarded rhetoric and hardened positions. Data boys – those who shape narratives and influence public opinion—were at daggers drawn, especially between the PDP and the APC. Political loyalty became combative, and disagreement quickly degenerated into hostility.
“The atmosphere of cooperation that governance requires was replaced with suspicion, mockery, and open antagonism. This level of disunity did not just “smell bad”; it stank, threatening the fragile social fabric of a state already sensitive to division.
“At the height of this tension, the main opposition party in the state had effectively written off the ruling PDP. A vote of no confidence was passed, not only on the party but directly on Gov. Mutfwang himself. This was more than opposition politics; it was a declaration of political war. The message was clear: the PDP government was no longer seen as viable, and the governor was being isolated, weakened, and targeted ahead of 2027.
“Compounding this crisis was the steady exit of political heavyweights from the PDP. Giants of the party—men and women who once shaped its fortunes in Plateau State—abandoned ship and decamped to the APC. These were not ordinary defectors; they were experienced political gladiators, battle-tested and strategically positioned. Their movement signaled readiness for a fierce showdown. By all indications, the PDP in Plateau State was heading into the next electoral cycle fractured, embattled, and outgunned.
“The situation, by every honest description, was horrible. The opposing forces were already fully charged. The political field was polarized, and reconciliation appeared impossible. Even pronouncements by those in authority within the state failed to calm nerves; in some cases, they worsened tensions.
Governance risked being swallowed by politics, and development threatened to become collateral damage.

“It was in this charged and dangerous atmosphere that Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang made the bold decision to realign with the APC. Unsurprisingly, the move did not go down well with many groups. Some saw it as betrayal, others as weakness, and still others as political opportunism. Yet history teaches us that leadership decisions are rarely judged fairly in the moment they are made. As the saying goes, man proposes, but God disposes. With time, the deeper wisdom behind the Governor’s action has become increasingly evident.
“The governor’s realignment became a balm—slowly but surely melting the hardened ice of disunity. What bullets could not achieve, dialogue and strategic realignment accomplished. The advantages of this decision are numerous and profound.
“For example, it immediately reduced political tension in the state. The major source of confrontation between the PDP and APC was neutralized; it fostered political unity by bringing former rivals under one broad platform, encouraging cooperation instead of conflict; it stabilized governance by allowing the Governor to focus more on administration and less on political survival; and it strengthened Plateau State’s relationship with the Federal Government, which is controlled by the APC.
“Furthermore, it opened wider access to federal support, projects, and goodwill for the development of the state; it weakened the culture of destructive opposition, replacing it with constructive engagement.
Seventh, it prevented a looming political implosion that could have paralyzed governance ahead of 2027; it restored confidence among investors and development partners who value political stability; it reunited political leaders who had been sharply divided, creating room for reconciliation and forgiveness; and it reduced the weaponization of ethnicity and religion in party politics by shifting focus to shared goals.
“It also enhanced security cooperation with federal agencies, which often thrives under political alignment; repositioned Plateau State strategically within national politics, giving it a stronger voice at the center; discouraged political bitterness and revenge politics that often follow electoral defeat; created a broader, more inclusive political family where diverse interests can be negotiated internally rather than fought publicly; and it significantly improved the chances of political continuity and stability beyond 2027, ensuring that ongoing projects are not abandoned.
“Beyond these advantages, the governor’s decision reflects political maturity. Leadership sometimes demands choosing the path that brings peace rather than applause. It requires the humility to adjust course in the interest of the greater good. Governor Mutfwang’s move was not about personal ambition alone; it was about rescuing Plateau State from a dangerous trajectory of division and stagnation.
“The realignment of Gov. Mutfwang with the All Progressives Congress stands as one of the most consequential and beneficial political decisions in the recent history of Plateau State. What initially appeared controversial has proven to be stabilizing, unifying, and forward-looking. It has cooled tempers, aligned interests, and repositioned the state for growth and relevance on the national stage.
“As Plateau State looks toward 2027, this decision offers a foundation for peace, development, and political coherence. It deserves recognition, not suspicion. The governor can be assured of the utmost support of well-meaning citizens who value unity over division and progress over partisan bitterness. Likewise, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can be confident of Plateau State’s loyalty and cooperation. Indeed, this political realignment may well be remembered as the best thing that happened to Plateau State at a critical moment in its history.”
