In a significant stride towards enhancing electricity access across Nigeria, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) recently signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with five private developers.
These developers—A4&T Power Solutions, Eauxwell Nigeria Limited, Skipper Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy Limited, and Privida Power—will deliver a combined 1,265 MW capacity of distributed renewable energy (DRE) projects. These projects include interconnected minigrids (IMGs), isolated minigrids, commercial and industrial (C&I) solutions, and productive use of energy (PUE) initiatives. The aim is to electrify peri-urban and rural communities, encompassing markets, businesses, households, public institutions, health clinics, and schools in both weak grid and off-grid areas.
The partnership, part of the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project administered by the REA, introduces new energy service models like Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) and promotes the mass adoption of energy-efficient appliances and PUE devices through sales, distribution, and credit financing. Additionally, the initiative will offer value-added services, including e-mobility, agricultural processing, cold storage, and e-cooking.
The breakdown of the combined 1,265 MW capacity is as follows- A4&T Power Solutions: 315 MW;- Privida Power: 200 MW;- Skipper Nigeria Limited: 250 MW; – Eauxwell Nigeria Limited: 250 MW and Havenhill Synergy Limited: 250 MW.

During the signing ceremony, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director/CEO of REA, highlighted the significance of this partnership under the DARES programme and the introduction of the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) model. “This is a landmark event. The RESCO model aims to provide developers with a platform to become utility companies, attract investment, and deploy mini grids.
These developers have the capacity and track record to not only deliver mini grids but also manage large portfolios of projects and scale up. This MoU demonstrates our commitment to roll out this RESCOs model and gives developers the opportunity to partner with REA to build mini grids and become RESCOs. We look forward to this mutually beneficial partnership.”
Balasubramanian G., High Commissioner of India, expressed his support, stating, “India and Nigeria have enjoyed a beneficial relationship in manufacturing and service industries since the 1960s. Skipper has implemented several electricity projects in Nigeria sponsored by the Indian Government. This signing will improve bilateral cooperation between India and Nigeria, and I am happy we are sharing our experience to develop Nigeria’s energy sector.”
The partnership marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy solutions and expanding electricity access in Nigeria, promising improved quality of life for many communities across the country.
