The Enugu State Government has raised a public health alarm following an outbreak of rabies in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, warning residents to take urgent preventive measures.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, disclosed this in a public notice issued on Tuesday, warning that the outbreak, traced to dogs, poses a serious threat to both humans and animals if not urgently contained.

The ministry warned that rabies remains one of the deadliest viral diseases, with an almost 100 per cent fatality rate once symptoms appear.

“Rabies is a highly fatal viral disease that affects both animals and humans. It is primarily transmitted through the bite or saliva of infected animals, especially dogs. Once clinical signs appear, the disease is almost always fatal,” the notice stated.

To curb the spread, the government outlined a series of preventive measures, urging residents, particularly pet owners, to act swiftly.

“In view of this development, the Ministry strongly advises the following containment measures: All dog owners are urged to vaccinate their dogs and other pets against rabies without delay. Restraint of animals: Pet owners should confine their animals and prevent them from roaming freely. Avoid contact with stray animals: Members of the public should avoid contact with stray or unfamiliar animals.

“Any suspected rabid animal (showing signs such as aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behaviour, or paralysis) should be reported immediately to the nearest veterinary authority within your Local Government Area.

“Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap under running water for at least 10 minutes and seek urgent medical care at the nearest health facility.

“Community leaders and stakeholders are encouraged to sensitise residents on the dangers of rabies and the importance of prevention.”

“The Ministry is actively working with relevant authorities to contain the outbreak and protect public health. For further information or to report cases, please contact the State Veterinary Services Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Enugu State,” the statement added.
