Nigerian wheelchair basketball player Musibau Shittu says representing Nigeria at the Paralympic Games remains the biggest dream of his career, despite more than two decades in professional sports.
In an interview with our reporter in Lagos, Shittu said he has competed in major African and European tournaments but still hopes to wear Nigeria’s colours on the Paralympic stage — a goal he first set as a teenager.
“My biggest dream is to play at the Paralympics,” he said. “That is the highest honour for any para-athlete.”
Shittu, who has represented Nigeria at the All Africa Games and other competitions, said qualifying has been difficult because the national team lacks regular tournaments and proper preparation before international qualifiers.
He noted that European teams enjoy constant exposure and training, making them more prepared for major championships. “We need structure to compete at that level,” he said.
Shittu said he remains committed to the national team and will always answer the call to represent Nigeria. “Even if I change nationality one day, the blood in me will always be Nigerian,” he said.
He also expressed hope that Nigerian sports authorities will invest more in wheelchair basketball before the next Paralympic qualification cycle. “If we prepare well, we can qualify,” he said. “The talent is there.”
Shittu encouraged younger athletes not to give up on their dreams, saying sports can transform lives. He reflected on his own journey from Bariga to Europe, describing it as proof that determination can overcome difficult beginnings.
“Sports changed my life and my family’s life,” he said. “I want others to see that their dreams are possible.
