The National Association of Seadogs(NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, in a bid to boost blood banks and save lives has donated blood to the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, and the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, both in Yaba, Lagos.
The donation which was carried out under the auspices of Zanas Deck(Lagos Mainland Chapter) of the association is in furtherance of the NAS medical mission and attracted over 50 members of the association, their wives and colleagues,
Speaking on the initiative, Capoon of Zanas Deck, Mr. Nnamdi Agulonu, said the need to save lives informed the intervention by the association.
According to him, the blood donation was organized in fulfillment of one of the cardinal objectives of the four compass points of NAS-For Humanistic Ideals designed to take place twice in a year.
Agulonu explained that the two government-owned hospitals that benefited from the exercise were chosen due to the peculiar nature of Lagos and the number of accident and emergency patients that are being rushed into these facilities on a daily basis.
‘‘We have identified this societal lacuna and we are prepared to contribute to humanity’s uplift by making sure that every six month, we will have our members do the blood donation within our immediate locality.
Also speaking, Consultant Hematologist, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, Dr. Mrs.Mulikat Badru, who represented the Chief Medical Director, urged other public-spirited organisation to emulate NAS and donate blood to the hospital.
In his own remarks, Colonel A.S Ayeni, explained that the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba due to its central location is inundated with huge traffic of patients that require emergency blood transfusion, particularly bone operation, assuring that that the blood donated by members of NAS would go a long way in saving lives in emergency cases.
Both CMDs while commending members of NAS, Zanas Deck for the kind gesture reminded Nigerians on the need to donate blood for indigent Nigerians.
They said, blood donors assist patients of all ages, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and cancer patients both at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba and The National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
