The Unity Fountain Abuja glowed with spiritual energy as protest group, Free Nigeria Movement, held prayers for the country. Members made supplication for the country, its leaders and the citizenry. There were also prayers for senior citizens including past leaders and all presidential candidates in the last presidential election.
Declaring the prayer open, convener, Dr. Moses Paul, admonished members to remain committed to nation building and abhor all actions and behaviours that can dent the image of the country. He called for prayers for the country, for its progress, unity and one that works for all. He said, “We are here to pray for our country, to make declarations for its present and future.
Today we are Muslims and Christians who carry a common burden of pain for a country we love dearly and have made sacrifices for. Our country must work for all of us – Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Efik, Birom, Fulani, APC, PDP, LP, NNPP, AAC, all political parties, and all Nigerians. We will pray for justice, peace, equity. For the right thing to be done. That INEC will give people the votes due to them. That is the only way that Nigerians can have the president that is truly ours.”
Leading a session on unity, Mr. Yusuf Zariye, who spoke in Hausa, called for a national awakening that will tracend the vestiges of religion and ethnicity. According to him, “Politicians unite to divide us. They tell us that we are Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba. They tell us that we are Christians, Muslims and other religions. But when the loot our treasury, they are neither of these things. We must unite against the divisions by politicians and their cronies.”
There were prayers for the unity of Nigeria and the future of its democracy led by both Christian and Muslim clergies.
