Operatives of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a suspect, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public of over N18 million under the guise of offering spiritual assistance and prayers.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged on October 3, 2026, by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” who alerted the police to complaints from members of the public about fraudulent activities being carried out in his name through a cloned Facebook profile.

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ilaro Division, immediately deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track down the suspect.

Through sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis, the operatives traced the suspect to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was arrested.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating the cleric on Facebook. He reportedly admitted using the prophet’s identity to deliver fake prophecies and offer prayer services to unsuspecting individuals, thereby defrauding victims both in Nigeria and abroad.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly targeted individuals seeking spiritual assistance through the cleric’s Facebook page, gained their trust and subsequently swindled them of more than N18 million. The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices and facilitate prosecution.

The arrest, according to the Command, underscores its determination to dismantle online fraud networks, curb identity theft and prevent cybercriminals from operating freely in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance, tactical discipline and swift response.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting residents from digital and physical threats, urging members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with religious leaders and other public figures on social media.

He advised citizens to verify the authenticity of social media accounts and avoid transferring money to unverified individuals in exchange for spiritual remedies, prayers or other promises.

The Command also urged members of the public to report cases of cybercrime, impersonation and other suspicious activities at the nearest police station or through the police toll-free lines.
