The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos announced that it will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The diplomatic mission disclosed this in a notice shared on its official X page on Sunday.

The embassy claims that Presidents’ Day was first created to commemorate George Washington’s birthday, but has since evolved into a day to honour all US presidents and their contributions to the nation’s history.

The official holiday also acknowledges the impact of U.S. presidents on world affairs, the embassy said.

The embassy included a historical fact about Washington in a linked message, stating that he was the creator of the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which was eventually renamed the Purple Heart.

It further stated that Washington’s image is still included on the Purple Heart medal today.

Every year, the United States observes Presidents’ Day as a federal holiday.
