Poor road infrastructure: Senate writes Tinubu

  • Calls for road concession

The Senate, on Wednesday, passed a motion, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to address poor rosd infrastructure in the six geopolitical zones of the country, to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

The Senate, in a motion tagged: “Poor State of Road Infrastructure and Menace of Gully Erosion in Nigeria.” and sponsored by all the lawmakers, with the exception of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said too many federal roads in “very deplorable conditions.”

The Upper Legislative Chamber constituted an adhoc Committee headed by Yahaya Abdullahi from Kebbi State, to identify all failed federal roads in the country, compile the list and revert to the Senate.

It also resolved that when the report of the adhoc Committee is ready, the findings will be forwarded to President Tinubu for action.

The motion read: “ In some states of the federation, erosion has created deep gullies thereby cutting off some communities from other parts of the country.

“Some of these federal roads have been awarded for either construction or rehabilitation only to be abandoned by the contractors after moving to site.

“Several trillions of naira has been spent on road construction and rehabilitation in Nigeria since democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999 with minimal impact on our roads.

“The poor state of the road infrastructure has virtually cut off many parts of the Nigeria, with its attendant negative impact on trade and commerce.

“The collapse has led to a decline in agricultural activities, adversely affecting the movement of agricultural produce from rural area and across the country, resulting in a slide in the country’s agricultural output and economy especially now the country need to diversify its economy.”

The Senate also preferring solutions, urged the Tinubu administration to consider road concessions
