Poor network can’t stop e-transmission – Sowore

Omoyele Sowore

Popular human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has dismissed concerns that Nigeria’s poor network coverage could undermine electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking on Morning Brief on Channels Television, Sowore emphasised that BVAS devices are capable of storing votes offline and uploading them once connectivity is restored, making network limitations an insufficient argument against insisting that real-time result transmission of electoral results be upheld.

Arguing further, the activist drew parallels with India, which conducts large-scale electronic elections for over 900 million voters, noting that Nigeria has no justification for resisting similar digital processes.

“If we can conduct secure banking transactions electronically, then we can conduct credible electronic voting,” he stated.

The activist highlighted that real-time transmission is key to curbing manipulation at collation centres, which he described as the “weakest link” in the current electoral system.

According to Sowore, timely e-transmission from polling units would prevent result tampering and enhance public confidence in the election.
