The Anambra State Police Command has stormed two hideouts and arrested five notorious gang members.
The suspects were alleged by the police to be involved in criminal activities in various parts of the state.
Daily Sun gathered that the gang engaged the operatives in a gun duel before they were overpowered by the police, and Okechukwu Okpo, 24, was apprehended.
Other suspects were also arrested during another raid on a Criminal hideout.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said police operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol, two live cartridges, and three plasma television. He said, “preliminary investigations showed that the gangs were responsible for over 24 armed robbery attacks, kidnappings, car-snatching incidents that happened along Oko Ufuma, Uga, Amaokpala expressway, among others.”
Ikenga disclosed that Okechukwu had in a recent confession narrated that the gang carried out an attack in a hotel on August 13, 2022, at Ndikelionwu, “the gang raped a female staff of the hotel and made away with three televisions and other items.”
In another development 20 years old Chukwubike Anieto, and 36 year old Chukwuemerie Ike, from Agulu; Chidera Muo, 25; Chukwuma Isreal, from Neni and Akwaeze respectively were nabbed by policemen attached to Neni in conjunction with the local security, last Friday.
Ikenga said,” the team recovered one berreta pistol, three motorcycles, one axe and three matchets. He also said one police belt, one Sumec generator, 13 different brands of phones, and other incriminating items were recovered after search in their house.”
He said the recoveries were made after an attack by the gang on a police constable along Umukabia Okofia village, Neni; and an attempt to rob a lady of her belongings along Okofia village, Neni.
Commissioner of Police Echeng Echeng assured that the confidence reposed on police would not be taken for granted.
He said the suspects would be charged to Court on the conclusion of the investigations.
