Police probe Arise News anchor’s death in Abuja robbery

Grief has enveloped the media community and the nation following the killing of Arise News anchor Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.

She died during a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, early yesterday.

Colleagues, viewers, journalists and members of the legal community who knew her have been thrown into deep mourning.

The death of the lady fondly call Sommie, a 29-old lawyer-turned-broadcaster was confirmed in a statement by the management of Arise News, which described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”

The statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, said: “Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, viewers, journalists and members of the legal community who knew her.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.

Meanwhile, Police in the FCT said it has  launched an investigation into the dastardly killing.
