Ninety–four suspected commercial sex workers who were arrested during a raid of some criminal rendezvous in the Ughelli area of Delta State, have been charged to court.
Also charged were some male suspects who were also apprehended during the raid carried out by a combination of special squads of the state police command on May 1, 2023.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Bright Edafe, who confirmed the development in a statement yesterday, said operatives acted on intelligence following reports of re-occurring criminal activities of kidnapping and armed robbery in Ughelli, Warri and other parts of the oil rich state.
Edafe stated that the raid was carried out on identified spots in Evwreni, East-West road and other black spots all in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
“During the operation, 59 male suspects, 94 female suspected commercial sex workers were arrested,” he stated.
Edafe said: “Three pump action guns, one locally made cut-to-size gun, one dagger, 10 live cartridges, one suspected stolen unregistered Toyota Venza, one unregistered Mercedes Benz, one Peugeot car with registration number KJA 98 GE.
nine cups of loud, codeine syrup, sachets of swinol, 20 capsules of tramadol, 31 wraps of weed suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered.
“The 94 commercial sex workers have been charged to court alongside some of the male suspects, while others have been transferred to the command headquarters for further investigation,” he added.
Edafe said operatives, who carried out the operation, were drawn from the command’s operations department, SIB, Dragon Patrol, Safer Highway, Raiders, CP D-Coy Squad, Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
