Physical inactivity remains a major public health concern, increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, as health advocates continue to encourage regular exercise and healthier lifestyles.
Against this backdrop, over 3,500 fitness enthusiasts are expected to converge on the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday, November 7, for the second edition of i-Fitness GameFest, an initiative aimed at encouraging physical activity through sports, fitness and community participation.
The event, themed “Different Squad, Unstoppable Together,” will bring together 689 competitors from 14 i-Fitness branches across Lagos Mainland to compete in football, a 100-metre sprint, a 200-metre relay, a sack race and an all-day lifting challenge.
The competition, which begins at 7:30am, is expected to attract thousands of supporters and guests, including over 2,300 i-Fitness members.
The fitness chain said the event was designed to build a community of people committed to healthier living and encourage members to make physical activity a regular part of their lives.
It further disclosed that eight branches, Magodo, Ogudu, Ikorodu, Iponri, Surulere, Ago Palace, Opebi and Acme, have qualified for the football knockout stage following preliminary matches held across the branches.
The first edition, GameFest 1.0 Island Edition, attracted over 1,500 participants, while more than 3,500 guests have registered for this year’s competition.
Founder and chief executive officer of i-Fitness, Foluso Ogunwale, said the competition was created to build a community of people committed to healthier lifestyles.
“When we started i-Fitness, our goal was to build a community of people who choose to live healthier lives. GameFest is where you see that community at its best,” he said.
Ogunwale said the participation of 14 branches, nearly 700 competitors and thousands of supporters demonstrated the growth of the fitness community.
He added that the company was proud of members who had trained for the competition and invited Lagos residents to attend.
On her part, Chief Marketing Officer of i-Fitness, Olajumoke Abiodun, said the growing participation showed that Nigerians increasingly wanted fitness to become part of their social lives.
“GameFest gives our members a reason to train with purpose and a day to celebrate what they have built together,” she said.
Abiodun said the increase in registered participants from over 1,500 at the first edition to more than 3,500 this year showed that people wanted fitness to be social, competitive and fun.
“Beyond the competition, guests will enjoy an Afro-dance warm-up, a live DJ, a closing dance-off and a healthy food and fitness marketplace running throughout the day. Champions will receive trophies, medals and prizes at the closing ceremony,” she added.
The fitness firm added that it has over 31 branches, more than 500 certified trainers and over 40 free weekly classes across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Brila FM is the official sports media partner of the event, while brand partners include Pocari Sweat, Red Bull, Rexona, Nirvana Water, MOL, Cold Stone Creamery, Pinkberry, Zayith Food Company, Uncover and Cosmo Cosmetics.
