PEWAN lecture to tackle housing challenges, promote sustainable building

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma

Stakeholders in the housing and construction industries will meet in Lagos on Wednesday to examine ways of addressing Nigeria’s housing challenges through sustainable construction, improved facility management and innovative building materials.

The discussion will take place at the 2026 Annual Lecture of the Property and Environment Writers’ Association of Nigeria (PEWAN), scheduled for November 4 at the NECA House Conference Hall, Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, is expected to attend as Special Guest of Honour, while the Managing Director of UPDC Plc, Mr Odunayo Ojo, has been invited to chair the event.

With the theme, “Re-imagining Housing: Sustainability, Facility Management and Innovative Building Materials,” the lecture will explore emerging solutions to Nigeria’s housing deficit, with particular attention to sustainable construction methods, efficient management of housing assets and the use of modern building materials.

The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of HBM Nigeria Plc, Mr Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, will deliver a presentation on “Innovative Building Materials: Place of the Private Sector.” His presentation is expected to examine how private-sector investment and business innovation can improve construction standards, promote modern building solutions and support sustainable housing delivery.

The association has also nominated the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Bldr. Florence Omolola Gbaye, for a Special Recognition Award in acknowledgement of her contributions to the built environment.

Gbaye is expected to deliver a goodwill message, while providing insights into LASBCA’s efforts to strengthen building control and promote safer construction practices in Lagos State.

HBM Nigeria Plc and its chief executive, Alade-Akinyemi, have also been nominated for recognition for their contributions to innovation in the building materials sector.

The awards will recognise individuals and organisations in the public and private sectors whose activities have contributed to quality, innovation and sustainable development.

Expected participants include built environment professionals, environmental science lecturers, government officials, real estate operators, non-governmental organisations, recyclers, students and other stakeholders in the housing and construction industries.

Speaking ahead of the event, PEWAN Chairman, Mrs Okwy Chikezie, said the annual lecture was designed to provide a platform for informed discussions on developments, challenges and opportunities in the built environment.

She said the association also hoped to encourage stronger collaboration between government and private-sector operators towards improving housing delivery in Nigeria.

PEWAN, an umbrella body for journalists covering property and environmental issues across print, electronic and online media platforms, expressed optimism that the participation of industry leaders and professionals would generate practical ideas for tackling the country’s housing challenges.
