Seun Egbegbe, a Nigerian filmmaker and producer, has recalled his prison experience.

In his most recent interview with actress Biola Adebayo on the ‘Talk to B’ podcast, Egbegbe said that he prayed constantly for survival while in jail.

While thanking God for preserving him, the filmmaker pointed out that convicts die every day in jail.

“People died every day in that prison. It is not a good place. I told God that if you truly exist, then I must leave here alive.

“If you go and return, thank God. Know that He loves you and has given you a second chance to live.

“There is a cell for new prisoners; it is called ‘welcome cell’. If 20 people were brought in overnight, at least two would be found dead by the following morning.”

It should be recalled that Seun Egbegbe was remanded in February 2017 after being accused of acquiring money under false pretenses from 40 Bureau De Change operators in order to exchange significant sums of naira into foreign currencies.

The police charged him with fraud totaling N39,098,100, $90,000, and £12,550. The court granted him N5 million bail, but he was unable to satisfy the terms and remained in detention.

He was ultimately acquitted in 2022, after five years and eight months in prison.
