The Diocese of Ogbaru, Anglican Communion, Anambra, has expressed serious concern over the rampant defections from one party to another by politicians, describing the trend as a threat to the country’s democracy.

The church stated this in a six-point communiqué issued at the end of the second session of the diocese’s Seventh Synod, held at Immanuel Anglican Church, Umunankwo, in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The communiqué was signed by the President of the Synod and Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Prosper Amah, and the Clerical Synod Secretary, Ven. Edozie Onwunyi.

The synod noted that the increasing wave of party defections weakened democratic institutions, undermined the foundations of governance and eroded public trust in the political system.

It called on political actors to embrace electoral reforms, strengthen anti-defection laws and promote ideology-based politics as measures to strengthen the country’s democracy.

It also urged stakeholders to encourage voter education, uphold internal party democracy and pursue moral reorientation in political leadership to restore public confidence in the political system.

The synod also urged government at all levels to intensify efforts towards the eradication of malaria, describing the ailment as a persistent public health challenge, requiring concerted action.

It expressed concern over the implementation of constituency projects, in spite their objective of bringing governance closer to the grassroots.

According to the communiqué, many constituency projects are characterised by abandonment, inflated contracts, corruption, the lack of transparency and failure to address the critical needs of citizens.

The synod urged the electorate to monitor project implementation in their constituencies, engage elected representatives, report irregularities and demand accountability in project delivery.

The church body commended the bishop for his leadership and developmental initiatives in the diocese, particularly in grassroots evangelism, education, affordable healthcare services and human capital development.

It also lauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s efforts at improving security and protecting lives and property across the state.

The synod, however, urged the State Government to sustain youth empowerment and job creation programmes.

It also drew government’s attention to the poor condition of the Atani-Ogwuikpele Road and called for urgent intervention.
