The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) radicalisation helpline has so far received 3,163 calls from Germans seeking to prevent a relative from becoming radicalised by Islamist ideology.

“Since the radicalisation helpline of the BAMF was opened in 2012 until the end of 2016, a total of 3,163 calls were received,’’ a news report said on Wednesday.

The office said it offered advice in 854 cases and in 238 cases a security threat was assessed.

“In 40 per cent of these cases the security authorities had already been aware of the threat,’’ the office said.

The office highlighted a lack of staff to deal with the cases and said the recruitment of suitable staff would continue to be a problem.
