The Osun State Government has trained over 600 English Language and English Literature teachers on effective strategies to create engaging and interactive classrooms.
The workshop, titled “Professional Development Workshop on Effective Strategies for Teaching English Language and English Literature,” was organized by the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Education, Hon. Teniola Lanlehin. The training sessions were held across the state’s three senatorial districts: Osogbo/Ikirun (central), Ife/Ilesa (east), and Iwo/Ede (west).
Speaking at the final session held in Ede on Wednesday, Lanlehin expressed concern about the low performance of students in English Language and English Literature. This concern, she explained, motivated the decision to organize the teacher training program.
Lanlehin expressed optimism that the training will equip teachers with the skills to impart knowledge in a way that is both friendly and effective, ultimately leading to improved student performance in external examinations.
“We want to teach them strategies they can use in the classroom to make learning meaningful,” Lanlehin said. “We’ll also expose them to new teaching methodologies to help them better engage their students.”
“We target 600 teachers,” she continued. “It is going to be a continuous thing because we need constant training of our teachers to support them. After all, it takes a lot of passion to do what our teachers do.”
Lanlehin further expressed dissatisfaction with the recent performance of Osun State students in external exams. She emphasized that the state cannot afford to fall behind due to poor academic results.
English Language and English Literature, she said, should be lively and interactive subjects, with two-way conversations between teachers and students. A boring classroom environment, she added, hinders learning and prevents students from effectively assimilating information.
