Senator Olalere Oyewumi, representing Osun West in the National Assembly, has rejected a police report linking him to recent violence in Ikire in Osun State.
He called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to establish an independent judicial commission of inquiry. The police had paraded a suspect, Sikiru Adedeji, who referred to the lawmaker as his boss.
Speaking on behalf of the families of four victims killed at the Naira and Kobo Junction, Oyewumi strongly repudiated the claim, accusing the authorities of framing victims to cover up extrajudicial killings.
He criticised the investigation as one-sided, alleging that key eyewitnesses were ignored and suspects were coerced into making false statements.
Oyewumi questioned why officers opened fire on unarmed civilians, how civilians could disarm six armed officers, and noted that police arrival coincided with threats by opposition political thugs to hijack local motor parks.
The Senator clarified that his intervention prevented further bloodshed. He urged the state government to quickly institute a panel to deliver justice for the deceased and hold responsible officers accountable. He also enjoined residents to remain calm
